Leonide Saad, Ph.D.

Leonide Saad, Ph.D.

Dr. Saad has a Ph.D. from M.I.T. with a specialty in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine. During 6 years of pioneering research in the field, he has worked in several key institutions: M.I.T., Harvard Medical School, Qinghua University ( Beijing ), Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Veterans’ Affair Boston Healthcare System. His tight and active network in the space is composed of worldwide specialists and entrepreneurs. He has worked very closely with Dr. Myron Spector of Harvard Medical School/Health Sciences & Technology, and Dr. Ioannis Yannas of M.I.T., two founders of the field of tissue engineering.

His multidisciplinary expertise in science and technology allows him to rapidly grasp the complex problems faced by regenerative medicine teams throughout the development chain. Dr Saad’s regenerative medicine experience comprises: biomaterial design, production, quality control; cell isolation, expansion, storage, differentiation, gene expression analyses; biochemical assays, cytokines and growth factors manipulation, cell/biomaterial interaction, biomaterial/tissue interaction, bioreactors, animal model, in-vivo cell tracking, surgical implantation of tissue engineered construct, histomorphometric analyses of regenerative response, microfluidics, microfabrication (MEMS device), regulatory approval path.

In his research on tissue engineering of the intervertebral disc, Dr. Saad has generated important new scientific knowledge. He has also helped research efforts in spinal cord, cartilage, tendon, heart, and brain tissue engineering. In 2003, he worked with Qinghua University , the “China M.I.T.”, to help a medical device start-up understand the FDA approval process. He has authored papers published in peer-reviewed journals and presents at prestigious research societies. Dr. Saad is also a member of Sigma-Xi Research Society, of the Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine International Society and a peer reviewer in journals of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. He was M.I.T. Presidential Fellow, a Whitaker Health Sciences Fund Fellow as well as an Ecole Polytechnique Fellow.

In addition to being a scientist, Dr. Saad has a solid business background with financial engineering expertise and investment banking experience. He has led several teams to win business plan competitions worldwide and has founded and managed ventures during the web 1.0 era. Dr. Saad also worked for France Department of Defense, for the Allianz Group and for Sodexho in Shanghai.

Dr. Saad holds a Ph.D. from M.I.T., with a core in Tissue Engineering/Regenerative Medicine and Manufacturing, a Financial Technology Certificate from the M.I.T. Sloan School of Management, a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from M.I.T., a Master of Engineering from Ecole Polytechnique, Paris , a B.S and M.S. in Applied Mathematics both from University of Pierre and Marie Curie in Paris.

Dr. Saad is a reserve Lieutenant in the French Army. He speaks fluent French, Mandarin Chinese and German and has basic conversational skills in Spanish and Korean. He enjoys reverse engineering electronic devices, optimize industrial designs of consumer products, photography, hiking and fencing. He also cooks professional French, Mediterranean, Chinese and Creole cuisine.
