What is Regenerative Medicine?
|
Regenerative Medicine (RM) is a rapidly expanding set of innovative medical technologies that restore function by enabling the body to repair, replace, and regenerate damaged, aging or diseased cells, tissues and organs. The RM field consists of five areas:Cell Therapies: Therapies that utilize cells or compounds designed to repair or regenerate a patients damaged, aging or diseased organs. Near term applications include heart disease, diabetes, vision impairments, and Parkinson’s disease. Tissue Engineering: Therapies that employ a scaffold or delivery system to create functional tissues and organs. Near term applications include bone regrowth, intervertebral disk repair, and urinary bladder or corneal replacements. Tools & Devices: Companies creating cell lines that embody genetic defects or disease characteristics that are used for the discovery, screening and development of new drugs. This sector also includes companies developing devices that are designed to enable regenerative medicine related procedures, such as specialized devices for the harvest, processing, selection and delivery of stem cells, cell-based diagnostic tools, etc. Regenerative Compounds: Compounds that trigger endogenous regeneration. This sector includes new chemical entities, growth factors, proteins, and other compounds that trigger cell and tissue regrowth, as well as advanced wound and fracture repair. Aesthetic Medicine: Companies developing cell therapies, tissues and biomaterials for cosmetic applications. This sector comprises hair follicle cells for hair regeneration, and collagen-secreting human dermal fibroblasts for facial wrinkles and other skin disorders. |
Regenerative therapies have been demonstrated (in trials or the laboratory) to heal broken bones, treat severe burns, blindness, deafness, heart damage, nerve damage, Parkinson's, diabetes and other conditions. Significant momentum has been achieved in recent years as evidenced by the surge in government and foundation research funding, with over 65 academic programs and more than $1.5B in worldwide funding for research, expected to grow to $14B in 10 years. There are 175,000+ peer-reviewed publications, 10,000+ issued/pending patents, and 900+ FDA-approved clinical trials for RM. More than 400 RM products have reached the market today, with more than 600 in development. This, in turn, has led to a proliferation of patient advocacy groups rightfully demanding a shift in medical treatment paradigms from "bandaid therapies" to prevention, cure, rejuvenation, restoration, and replacement. More than 1.2 Million patients have been treated with RM products and therapies. Savvy entrepreneurs and passionate physicians and scientists are joining forces to take on the challenge of translating this innovative research into revolutionary medical therapies capable of alleviating the tremendous healthcare burden experienced by developed and developing countries worldwide. There now 300+ private and 50+ public companies with more than $4.7B in total Market Cap,. The current market for RM is $3.6B in 2008, and is projected to reach $118B in 2013, yielding a CAGR of 16%. With DHHS predicting the market for RM will reach $300B by 2020, it's no surprise that many analysts feel the sector is now entering into the inflection phase of the Garnter Curve for what some are calling "the internet of healthcare." It is the mission of Proteus Venture Partners to transform healthcare through regenerative medicine, capitalizing on the convergence of key market factors including: an ever-aging population, diminishing Big Pharma pipelines, and significant corporate investment (eg. PerkinElmer's recent acquisition of ViaCell for $300M, Genzyme's acquisition of AnorMed for $580M, and Medtronic's $135M joint venture with Genzyme). In this quest towards commercialization, Proteus Venture Partners has assembled the brightest minds in the field and built an elite team capable of providing the capital, scientific insight, and business leadership to launch and support the most successful RM companies in the world. Proteus Venture Partners will execute its mission by employing its proprietary deal flow and due diligence algorithms, an active management philosophy, and 50+ years of exit strategy experience through licensing deals, M&A transactions, and public offerings. |
